February 7th, 2018 – Murfreesboro, TN – On Monday morning, February 5th, Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Center welcomed guests in celebration of the opening of the newly renovated children’s playroom within the center’s safe shelter. The playroom renovation was funded by a generous $5,000 grant awarded to Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Center by The Predators Foundation. The playroom is warmly referred to as the “Preds Play Cave” in honor of the fun and spirited Gnash and the Nashville Predator’s hockey team.
The playroom renovation includes fresh, updated carpeting, Predators gold and navy wall coloring, new toys for a wide variety of ages, Predators decor complete with official NHL hockey sticks hung and a themed handmade wall-clock that includes authentic hockey pucks given by the Preds. The “Preds Play Cave” also includes a cozy parent seating area, allowing families an opportunity to spend quality play time together that is relaxing and stress-free.
“It is so important for children to have unstructured, free play time, especially during this difficult and traumatic time,” said Kara Mischke, Community Relations Manager for Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Center. “Play is a child’s way of expressing and developing healthy emotions regarding their life and the things going on around them. We are so excited to be able to provide this space for our families here at the shelter.”
This exciting unveiling of the new playroom served as the launch of the shelter’s plans of a full renovation endeavor. Additional projects include a full kitchen remodel, fresh paint and flooring throughout the shelter and new furniture and furnishings. “The shelter was built in 2004 and this will be the first complete renovation the shelter has had in 14 years”, noted Karen Lampert, Executive Director. “We are excited to be working with a family foundation, Charity Circle and the Christy Houston foundation to sponsor part of the renovation efforts. We are so grateful to everyone who is helping to provide a warm and welcoming living environment to bring hope and healing to families affected by domestic violence or sexual assault.”
Sponsorship opportunities are still available for companies or individuals to adopt a room or space in the Bernard House shelter, and to support the center in providing a safe and warm space for those seeking emergency sheltering free from personal violence.
